If you plan to try out becoming a triathlete, you might think clothing should be the last of your worries. But what you wear can actually make a huge difference in your performance, so it’s definitely something to pay attention to and prepare for.
One- piece vs. Two-piece Suits
Triathlon clothing for women can be either a one-piece or two-piece outfit. A one-piece tri suit is streamlined and will allow you quicker transitions between each leg. Also, because it’s all one piece, you don’t have to worry about the top riding up. Many professionals prefer it because it’s aerodynamic. On the other hand, two-piece suits are versatile because you can mix and match them. They also make toilet stops way easier than if you have to unzip a one-piece suit. Just make sure to choose a top and shorts that will not ride up.
In addition to the basic triathlon clothing for women, you will also need other accessories for safety and comfort during each leg of the triathlon.
SWIM
Swim cap: Typically, you will be provided with a swim cap in a color that coordinates with your start wave but it’s a smart idea to bring an extra one.
Wetsuit: If you would be swimming in cold water, it is ideal and may be required to wear a wetsuit. The downside is that a wetsuit can be expensive, which is not good for beginners who also need to purchase other clothing and equipment, too. If you’re tight on budget, look for companies that offer wetsuits for rent. Whether buying or renting a wetsuit, make sure to try it because getting the right fit is critical.
CYCLING
Helmet: For obvious safety reasons, every race requires that you wear a helmet. Just like when you’re shopping for triathlon clothing for women, it’s very important to choose a helmet that is comfortable since the longest portion of a triathlon is cycling and you’ll also be using the helmet often in training. If you can find a very comfortable helmet for less the price, then there’s no need to spend more for safety features. Some expensive helmets may be more comfortable but they are not necessarily safer than cheaper ones.
RUN
Running cap: While head gear is not required, it’s a good idea to wear a billed cap – one that’s comfy and breathable – to protect you from the bright sun or rain.
Socks: If your skin blisters easily or you’re doing a long race, wearing breathable and moisture-wicking socks will keep your feet comfortable and dry. Socks come in different thickness and fiber so you can choose the most comfortable. Just never use cotton socks because they retain moisture and will not keep you warm.
