The automatic transmission filters are known to be responsible for removing the debris and the sludge from the transmission. Over some period of time, the filter is usually saturated with foreign materials hence they must always be flushed or replaced. You will also need to replace the automatic transmission filters even after flushing. Raybestos Powertrain recommends the servicing of your automatic transmission after every 30,000 miles. This task can always be done by anyone who has basic automotive repair skills.

What You Need to Know about Changing an Automatic Transmission Filter

1. Drive the car’s front wheels onto the ramps. Set the transmission in ‘park’. Engage the parking brake and switch off the car engine. Has the wheel chock placed behind the back wheel?

2. You can then climb beneath the front end with a socket set and a catch pan. Slowly slide the catch pan under the bottom edge where the transmission is located and loosen the bolts of the pan using the socket set. You can then allow for the transmission fluid to slowly drain into the pan.

3. Remove the bolts of the pan together with the socket set and place them aside in a place where you can reach them.

4. Scrap any of the pan gasket materials which are remaining from the bottom of the transmission using a gasket scraper.

5. Grab the automatic transmission filter that you purchased from a reputable parts dealer, and pull it down. Set in the catch pan and push the new filter into place.

6. Climb out from the transmission pan and spray light coating of the spray adhesive on the surface of the sealing. Give it some time to cure as per the instructions indicated on the adhesives container. Apply some pan gasket to the pan making sure that you have lined up all the bolt holes.

7. Slide back under your car and position the transmission pan against the bottom of the transmission. You can then screw the pan bolts using your hand and tighten them later using a socket set in a crossing pattern.

8. Open up the hood and pull the transmission dipstick out. Place the funnel into the dipstick tube and slowly pour in the transmission fluid.

9. Take out the pipe and reinstall the dipstick. You can then start the engine but have one of your feet depressing the brake pedal firmly.

10. Take out the dipstick while the engine is still running and check the levels of the transmission fluid. You can then top off as needed. At Raybestos Powertrain, you are assured to get the best automatic transmission filters.
