It’s an unfortunate fact that if you’re like most people, you’re likely to wait until your car doesn’t start before you give much thought to buying a battery for it. Even then, you might not think about what type of battery gets put into your car. However, there are a lot of different options available when it comes to car batteries and some advance preparation can help prevent either an unwanted, inappropriate or inferior product from being put in your vehicle in an emergency.
The first thing to consider is the type of battery you want for your vehicle. There are actually two different types of car batteries to choose from. The first type of battery is a lead-acid battery. This is the type of battery you probably are used to seeing in cars; a black box of a battery with two posts on top of it. This battery is a less expensive battery, so if you’re on a budget, a lead-acid battery might be a good choice for you.
The drawback of the lead-acid battery is it generally doesn’t last as long than the other type of battery, an absorbed glass mat (AGM) battery. If you have looked under the hood of many new cars, you are likely seeing AGM batteries inside them. AGM batteries are more durable and can withstand more abuse than lead-acid batteries. However, they are much more expensive. With new batteries, you get what you pay for. If you’re lucky, you might be able to find a shop who sells reconditioned batteries, and as long as the shop stands by its work, it is another way you could find either type of battery at an affordable price.
You also may want to identify who is going to service your vehicle when you need a battery installed. There’s not much point in selecting a battery if you have nobody to install it correctly! Make sure the company you choose either carries your battery or is willing to order the battery you have selected. Ask what the policy is on battery recycling. You don’t want to be stuck with an old battery or with having to pay for your own battery recycling. Ask about installation charges for car batteries and what warranty is provided by the company to ensure the company stands by their work.
